Dodd, Blogs Celebrate FISA Victory

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

Senator Dodd issued the following statement in response to Senator Reid pulling the Intel Committee bill from consideration until the new year:

"Today we have scored a victory for American civil liberties and sent a message to President Bush that we will not tolerate his abuse of power and veil of secrecy. The President should not be above the rule of law, nor should the telecom companies who supported his quest to spy on American citizens. I want to thank the thousands of Americans throughout the country that stood with me to get this done for our country."

The progressive blogs, who played a huge role in lobbying the Senate to support Dodd's leadership against retroactive immunity, are joining in the celebration now that the FISA bill has been pulled until next year.

In an email, Athenae of First Draft writes, "Seriously, that was some awesome with awesome sauce and a side of pure, crispy win."

Crooks & Liars has video of Dodd's closing remarks this evening.

Jason Rosenbaum at The Seminal writes, "This victory means Dodd’s filibuster has weight. It also makes it much more likely that he will win round two as he continues to stand up for the Constitution and against telecom immunity."

Sam Stein at the Huffington Post sets the early narrative - one which I think accurately describes how events evolved over the course of the last few days - in an article titled "Dodd's Filibuster Threat Persuades Reid."

Senator Chris Dodd won a temporary victory today after his threats of a filibuster forced Democratic leadership to push back consideration of a measure that would grant immunity to telecom companies that were complicit in warrantless surveillance....While he never technically conducted a filibuster, according to aides, Dodd left the floor only once, to address a press gathering. He did, on occasion cede time to his Democratic colleagues. But even then, they say, he remained engaged in the debate.
"Everyone who spoke on the floor said they were grateful for Dodd taking a stand," said a staffer to the Senator who asked not to be named. "They said if it weren't for him they wouldn't be having this much-needed debate."

Also, thanks to everyone at FireDogLake for all the help driving activism today.

Bravo Senator Dodd - and the whole Dodd team that made this happen!

So nice to have a good news day!

Sam December 17, 2007 - 7:52pm

Thanks God somebody in the Senate stood up for the constitution!!!

what happened to all the other Dems??

I live in MO. Why can't Bond move to CT. and Dodd come here!!

Blue Girl, Red State December 17, 2007 - 8:50pm

Boy howdy, do I agree with that one, Sam! We are stuck with him until 2010, since our Missouri Senators are classes I and III. I was one of the first bloggers to post on the good news, and I ended my post with a personal "Thank You!" to Senator Dodd.

Congratulations, Senator. That one you won today? You won it for all of us, and I appreciate your efforts on behalf of civil liberties and the Constitution. Thank you for standing up. And I mean that from the bottom of my bleeding, liberal heart.

Fernando December 17, 2007 - 7:56pm

Today's contribution in a series of recognitions for your efforts Chris. Keep it up and I'll send more.

Asa December 17, 2007 - 7:58pm

Thank you, Senator, for taking a stand today and on this critical issue in general. I am shocked that any lawmaker would consider what is clearly a suspension of the constitution.

Jazmac December 17, 2007 - 8:04pm

So, that's LEADERSHIP!?!? Almost forgot what it looked like. Thank you Senator Dodd!

Tim December 17, 2007 - 8:06pm

We need better leadership in congress. It shouldn't have had to come to this. You showed great leadership when nobody else would stand up for us. A sincere thank you is in order.

Keep up the great work!

mary ann b. ford December 17, 2007 - 8:06pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your action has given us hope.

Anna December 17, 2007 - 8:07pm

Senator Dodd, you were simply great. You were right on with your arguments and looked as if you could have easily stood there for another 5 days straight. You demonstrated to everyone what a leader sounds and looks like.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Anna

AndiNArizona December 17, 2007 - 8:09pm

Thank you, Senator Dodd! The leadership you showed today in leading the filibuster against the retroactive immunity legislation was nothing short of spectacular. We need more Dems like you! In one of the few moments since the Dems took control of Congress last November, I'm proud to be a Democrat!

Ellynonymous December 17, 2007 - 8:10pm

Thank-you Senator Dodd. You rule! Thanks to you, I have a little hope for my country. Your opening speech was so moving. I am proud to have been a part of this and will continue to support your efforts to defend our constitution.

AThomas December 17, 2007 - 8:12pm

Thank you Senator. Now our efforts shift to convincing the American public why this matters. It matters to them, and they need to let their Senators and Representatives know.

Ima December 17, 2007 - 8:12pm

Senator Dodd - thanks again for the exceptional leadership that you've shown on this issue since the beginning. Yours is a brand of leadership that is sorely lacking in our country. Hopefully it will inspire others.

It was very interesting to note who was there in the trenches today fighting for the Constitution and the Rule of Law and who was sitting on the sidelines.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy campaign schedule to fight the good fight!

Julie December 17, 2007 - 8:13pm

Thank you for your leadership!

Pete Bledsoe December 17, 2007 - 8:15pm

A sudden and unexpected victory -- temporary, yes, but a victory nevertheless. The more joyful for being so unhoped for!! Thank you, Chris Dodd!!

tmout December 17, 2007 - 8:18pm

Senator Dodd is a hero for taking a stand, and the only democratic candidate qualified to be president, due to his deep commitment to our constitution and the rule of law

Anna Granfors December 17, 2007 - 8:19pm

thanks so much, Senator Dodd. you gave many some needed hope today.

Bill in Colorado December 17, 2007 - 8:20pm

Thank you Senator Dodd. I can continue to carrry my copy of the Constitution for a little longer.

mergenow December 17, 2007 - 8:21pm

Amazing!

Thank you, Senator Dodd.

The last time I checked the status on the filibuster was at work, and the few updates I saw were not terribly inspiring. I applaud you, and Sens. Feingold and Kennedy, for standing up for the Rule of Law and the Constitution.

holly December 17, 2007 - 8:23pm

Others talk about leadership while Senator Dodd leads.

Thank you. I'm quite sure your father would be proud of your efforts today, as am I and countless other Americans. But where are my manners? Thanks go out to Senator Dodd's staff, supporters, and all those who took time out of their busy lives to participate in this push to restore the rule of law.

I love this country.

Cathy C. December 17, 2007 - 8:26pm

Thank you and congratulations Senator Dodd! You did the Democrats proud today. Too bad there aren't more like you.

Cynthia December 17, 2007 - 8:29pm

Wahoo! Finally leadership from a Democrat. You gave us hope today, Senator Dodd. Keep up the good work.

vaporland December 17, 2007 - 8:30pm

Fantastic. When I saw that both of my home state senators voted against Sen. Dodd, I was profoundly disappointed. Neither of them (Warner-R-Va., Webb-D-Va.) will ever have my support again.

kailuacaton December 17, 2007 - 8:30pm

Right on Senator Dodd. That was true Leadership. You are a true patriot.

Huey December 17, 2007 - 8:30pm

Thank you Senator Dodd.
I came right here from FDL, and it is nice to see them get a tip of the hat.
Enjoy my contribution while I go to work on Senator Feinstein.

Denise December 17, 2007 - 8:31pm

Senator Dodd!

You are a hero! Thank you for sticking with this issue. THIS is what a presidential candidate does if they are currently a senator running for president. I know your father would be proud.

Keep on keeping on!

Jimmy December 17, 2007 - 8:31pm

THANK YOU!

ccatmoon December 17, 2007 - 8:32pm

Once again you are my hero! It's tragic that you must fight both the repugs AND the so-called "leader" of the dems in the Senate. Harry Reid is a traitor!

And SHAME on Senators Clinton and Obama for not having the guts to leave their campaigns and join you.

JIM December 17, 2007 - 8:33pm

SEN. DODD BRAVISSIMO!!!!!!!!!!!! I love you man. You are a TRUE AND RARE PATRIOT>> You are a leader with integrity.. we need more of you............... Bush /Cheney are criminals and without conscience.. Next , supeonas and indictment!!!!!!!!!!

Chris December 17, 2007 - 8:34pm

BRAVO! What can the rest of us do to kick the fight back into the rest of our Democratic members of the House and Senate? We need leadership with integrity like yours. Why don't they believe we *will* stand and support them when they hit by the ludicrous GOP smear machine? Thank you, Senator Dodd! I wish you lived in California.

kimoco December 17, 2007 - 8:35pm

Don't forget us Kossacks, we made calls to everyone of the senators, and many donated to Senator Dodd, even if he was not their first choice before today!

Brenda in Spokane December 17, 2007 - 8:38pm

Although the fight is far from over, I think we can all agree that this was a victory! Thank you, Senator Dodd, for your leadership and for fighting for the Constitution. It's great to see that others think of the Constitution as something other than a "GD piece of paper"! We'll keep up the fight. Know that you have our support!

linda kelly December 17, 2007 - 8:38pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
At last someone we the people can believe in. This is one Senator that will be asked to stay in Congress...the rest of them, we'll see.
A great moment!

Nancy December 17, 2007 - 8:38pm

Senator Dodd, Today you showed the world what a Democrat should look like. Your articulate, rational discussion on the Senate floor today took my breath. Nothing in the world compares to reason and truth spoken from a position of strength. Thank you, Senator. Maybe your courage will rub off on some of our other "representatives." Thanks to Senator Feingold too. His words are always rational in an otherwise wonderland-like forum.

Jennifer December 17, 2007 - 8:39pm

You have renewed my faith in the Democratic Party. Well done, Senator. Thank you for standing up for the Constitution, the rule of law and the American people. The other Presidential candidates could learn a thing or two (or a thousand things) from you. It's an honor to have you in the Senate.

Glenn Koetzner December 17, 2007 - 8:40pm

One only had to watch you on C-Span to see what true leadership and commitment are. Thank you!

Jim Thatcher December 17, 2007 - 8:41pm

Whoopie Senator Dodd. Especially on the day that the turncoat Democratic vice presidential candidate (No wonder Gore almost lost) endorsed ... uggghhh McCain!

Linda Seaman December 17, 2007 - 8:42pm

Thank You Senator Dodd!

Sergey Kazachenko December 17, 2007 - 8:43pm

Thank you Senator. You showed us today that we can break the neocon stranglehold on our country's neck - as long as we are not afraid to speak the truth.

Carolyn C. December 17, 2007 - 8:43pm

Bless you Senator Dodd!!! You have proven that you are one of the few elected official who deserves or even understands the office s/he holds.

It is crazy-making to watch corrupt politicians wiping their feet on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights for which so many have died.

Bless you for your courage and conviction. You have my undying gratitude!!!

Steve December 17, 2007 - 8:44pm

Thank you senator Dodd! Yer a great 'mercan! Where have all the true patriots gone? I was a Republican for 29 years and I just don't understand how my former party supports an omnipotent, omnipresent government. If nothing else, it's just too damn expensive.

Since when did standing up for the constitution and the rule of law become a liberal ideal? If that's the case, count me as a liberal.

Congratulations on getting the bill pulled - you won the battle, but the war still looms. Keep up the good fight!

John Evans December 17, 2007 - 8:44pm

You are a statesman. I watched as you fought hard for our rights. It was heartfelt to know someone was willing to stand up for freedom. Thank you very much Senator Dodd.

sls December 17, 2007 - 8:45pm

Finally, the rule of law prevails. Thank you Senator Dodd for standing up for average Americans who are sick of Washington cash register politics and influence peddlers, regardless of their political party. Let the litigation continue. We have a right to know what these telecom companies have been doing to us at the urging of this arrogant and inept administration. No one should fear or fight the truth. That goes for Sen Reid as well as Mr. Bush.

grayslady December 17, 2007 - 8:46pm

Senator, I was in tears as I read the speech you made from the floor of the Senate today. Finally, someone was saying publically and eloquently what so many of us have felt for so long. You were fearless, and for the first time in a long time you made be proud to be an American again. The repetition of your oath of office was particularly moving. Thank you.

Chris Paris December 17, 2007 - 8:47pm

Dear Sen. Dodd:

I can't tell you how much I deeply appreciate your service to our Nation today. Thank you for your hard work protecting our freedoms. Onward to the barricades!

Yours,

Chris Paris
Houston, Texas

Steve Fallon December 17, 2007 - 8:47pm

I am a Biden supporter but I wanted to stop by to express my sincere appreciation for Senator Dodd's truly remarkable performance today on the floor of the Senate. His arguments were clear, to the point, and they were presented with such power that I almost felt sorry for the GOP . . . I said "almost."

sandra December 17, 2007 - 8:47pm

Thank you, this is huge and very encouraging. america has politicians who walk the walk and don't just talk or worse.

Cindy Ross December 17, 2007 - 8:48pm

Many, many kudos to you, Sen. Dodd! During the delay you have won, I intend to keep phoning the do-nothing Senators in Washington who SHOULD have had your back today, and did not. I will be letting certain Presidential candidates know that they have lost my vote. I will be letting my Senators know that I will be voting them out of office the very first chance I get. I will be thanking Sen. Feingold for supporting you. And I will be saving my nickels and dimes so that I can continue to support your campaign.

You have heartened us all today, sir.

SSmith December 17, 2007 - 8:48pm

Thank You Senator Dodd! I hope that the other Democrats in the Senate will follow YOUR lead and keep this mis-administration in check. Thank you for standing up for real American values.

Jesus Aguillon December 17, 2007 - 8:48pm

Thank you Senator Dodd. It is so refreshing to see true leadership in action. Keep up the fight.

Anonys December 17, 2007 - 8:48pm

You are a true American Hero, in the spirit of our country's founders. In a vast desert of mean spirited selfishness, your actions are an oasis of hope. Good for you and all who have supported you!

Jojo December 17, 2007 - 8:48pm

That was beautiful. Simply Beautiful. Thank you so much Senator. Today you made me prouder to be an American than I've felt in nearly a decade. You were fantastic.

What a Patriot you are! Our nation's Founders would be damn proud to know you sir. Damn proud indeed.

THOMAS December 17, 2007 - 8:48pm

Thank God for Dodd. The other Dems should be ashamed of themselves. Great job Mr.Dodd.

As for the rest of you Dems, GROW A PAIR!!!

James December 17, 2007 - 8:50pm

Thank you from the bottom of my poor, inspired, student heart. I wish I was able to contribute to your candidacy with a donation, but for now, just know that there are many of us out there that have profound respect for what you accomplished. Thank you thank you thank you!

Anonymous December 17, 2007 - 8:51pm

Thank you, thank you for standing up for the Constitution. I truly believe that you are the only candidate for president who would immediately roll back Bush's executive orders that have watered down our civil rights. How I wish we could make this an issue in the campaign. You are a true patriot to take on the FISA issue. Senators Clinton and Obama should have been by your side. Shame on them.

Geoff December 17, 2007 - 8:52pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you! It is so good to see real leadership again and have my dark cloud of pessimism about the direction of our nation lifted a bit. I gave my first political contribution to your campaign earlier today and now feel it was the wisest possible donation I've ever given. You've proven that "We the People" are still considered important in this country... at least by some of our elected officials.

Thank you.

Amy December 17, 2007 - 8:54pm

Senator Dodd,

Today was an historic day for the Senate, the Democratic Party and the people of this country. Because of your outstanding leadership skills, we may actually be able to reclaim our Constituional rights and put a stop to the erosion of our civil liberties.

Your courage and integrity will not be forgotten.

Doug December 17, 2007 - 8:54pm

I was beginning to think the days of the US Republic were over.
Thank you!
Maybe we can keep it for awhile longer.

Orangutan. December 17, 2007 - 8:55pm

THANK YOU. Learned about your American Effort over at Crooks & Liars dot com. Thank you Senator Dodd. You are really starting to impress me. Thanks.!!!

Please don't stop now. Continue your efforts and investigate these criminal intentions.

Ed December 17, 2007 - 8:56pm

Finally, a Democrat with some integrity. Thank you Sen. Dodd. The nation owes you a large amount of kudos for what you have done. I am also proud of my home state Sen. Wyden for standing up to the dimwit Reid and his friend Bush. Thank you, thank you.

Geoff December 17, 2007 - 8:57pm

Forgot to mention - let's remind Hillary, Barack and all the other "front-runners" that real leadership is not shown in massive fundraisers, celebrity endorsements or test-marketed speeches but in standing up for principles and making a difference as you have shown. Let their absence in this important chapter of American democracy be known to all.

Patti December 17, 2007 - 8:57pm

Thank you so much Senator Dodd for being a true leader. Please continue to fight for the Constitution and the rule of law for "we the people."

Susan December 17, 2007 - 8:57pm

Congratulations, Senator Dodd. The loss of civil liberties and government accountability during the current administration has been so dispiriting. It's great to celebrate a victory today.

Anonymous December 17, 2007 - 8:58pm

Thank you, and please continue to press this issue. If the United States sets a precedent for retroactive immunity for private sector firms that violate constitutionally-based laws under government pressure, it will destroy any legal foundation for private sector-based privacy management solutions. That foundation must remain strong. There are frequently good reasons for covert surveillance, but we need strong oversight and legal warrants to legitimize such activity. If the current processes to obtain such warrants are unnecessarily burdensome and time-consuming, then we need to explore ways of solving that problem using information technology solutions.

Dave J. December 17, 2007 - 8:58pm

You KICK ASS Senator Dodd!!!!!

I hope you don't need to do this again in January.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

We need you in our government.

Dave J.

Geoff December 17, 2007 - 9:00pm

Forgot to mention - let's remind Hillary, Barack and all the other "front-runners" that real leadership is not shown in massive fundraisers, celebrity endorsements or test-marketed speeches but in standing up for principles and making a difference as you have shown. A. B. December 17, 2007 - 9:02pm

Senator Dodd,

Thank you very much. I wish there were more people like you in our government.

Ajax the Greater December 17, 2007 - 9:03pm

You Senator Dodd are the true MAJORITY LEADER of the Senate. What you did today on behalf of the American people, along with the inspirational Senator Feingold and other true patriots was truly inspirational.

Time after time the majority of America has watched in shock and dismay as the country is held hostage by a radical minority, from endless spending on infinite war, to compromising the essence of what it means to be Americans.

You know that something is very wrong when the Majority Leader time and time again is calling up legislation to the Senate floor that has significantly more support form the likes of Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer and Sean Hannity than it does from the American people.

The time to compromise American civil rights, not to mention our national safety and security, all in order to protect the most corrupt and despised administration in the history of this country is OVER. Protecting the large telecoms who aided and abetted the current administration in breaking the law for years is UNACCEPTABLE. And you stood up for us when we feared no one would.

You have showed true leadership. You should be Majority Leader. Senator Reid seems like a decent man, but he is constantly acting contrary to the will of the American people and our CONSTITUTION.

Senator Dodd for MAJORITY LEADER!

Jerome Shipanik December 17, 2007 - 9:05pm

Thank you Chris Dodd, finally a Democrate that has stood up, now if only you could get my senator to stand up to the Repugs and Mr. Bush, and torture......Ms Dianne Feinstein is not doing the right stuff, has no back bone and like her friend Joe Leiberman, she needs to join the other party....

Craig in MN December 17, 2007 - 9:05pm

Senator Dodd,

You and Senator Feingold served our country today in a way that has happened too infrequently in the past 20 years, and America should be very proud of you and indebted to you for standing true to your convictions.

I have been personally trying to become employed for ten months - Bushco's "robust economy" is just another pack of lies - but with your actions today I found myself contributing to your campaign because it is rare in our country today to find a statesman that places principles above personal gain.

Clinton and Obama talk a good talk, but apparently their priorities today were to be out campaigning and not being present in the Senate to back their words with actual actions.

In Minnesota we expect "Bush's lap dog" (aka Norm Coleman) to back everything Bush and Cheney do regardless of its legality, but now I find that our junior senator, Amy Klobuchar consistently follows the path of her fellow senior senator - I guess she's another one of those politicians that's too busy listening to her "consultants" to bother paying attention to the Constitution or the wishes of her constituency (although maybe she believes that big $$$ from telecoms is her constituency).

Keep strong and know that there are many Americans supporting both your fight to protect the Constitution and supporting your presidential campaign.

Anonymous December 17, 2007 - 9:05pm

Thank you Senator!

We have your back and will push the rest of the Senate to make sure Bush is not allowed to destroy the 4th amendment!

Great Job!

Faye December 17, 2007 - 9:06pm

Thank you for your wisdom, courage and leadership in defense of our Constitution. Our true security comes to us through this extraordinary, cherished document.

robin December 17, 2007 - 9:09pm

Finally! Thank you Senator Dodd, for standing up to Bush on the FISA law. We have been waiting for a democrat in congress to show some courage on this issue -- or, frankly, any issue. I'm proud of you and I'll be supporting you in your run for the presidency. I'm sure I will not be the only one. Please don't stop fighting for the American people and the constitution. And don't listen to those who seem to be afraid for political reasons. They don't know what their talking about. If this had gone through, if you hadn't been there, it would have been a disheartening defeat of momentous proportions for our country, and the democratic party. Thank you again. And shame on Clinton, Obama and Biden for not being there as well. That they supported the filibuster isn't enough. They should have been there to support you.

Paul from Michigan December 17, 2007 - 9:10pm

Dear Senator Dodd!!

You are a true hero of the Constitution today! You are an inspiration to someone like myself who had grown cynical of all politicians. If you were the Senate Majority Leader I'm sure instead of 200 billion more for an unending war in Iraq, we would have been bringing our troops home by now to celebrate Christmas safe and alive with their families!

Senator Dodd, once again thank you for your courage and willingness to stick your neck out for our freedoms as Americans! If you're name is on the ballot in Michigan I will proudly cast my vote for you!

Thank you for standing up to fascism Mr. Dodd. It is time we take our country back!

Alice December 17, 2007 - 9:16pm

Thank you, Senator Dodd, for putting the Constitution before campaigning. Talking the talk is easy; walking the walk is where true courage and leadership come out. You took a principled stand and when forced by Senator Reid, you followed through and showed your integrity and leadership -- not empty rhetoric. Thank you.

Dan McGinn December 17, 2007 - 9:18pm

Paul Carrel December 17, 2007 - 9:18pm

Thanks for your effort to uphold the Constitution. I'm disappointed that others, running for president, didn't join with you and return to D.C.

Jeffrey December 17, 2007 - 9:20pm

Thank you and your Spine Senator Dodd!

Please cement your victory by bringing attention to the obvious fact that the telecoms and their legal departments knew, or should have known, that what they were doing was and is illegal. Given that Qwest and others refused to cooperate "full heartedly" shows that the administration's orders were legally questionable. The defense of "we were only following orders" should not be any more valid in the here and now than is was at the Nuremberg trials.

E.S. Maurer December 17, 2007 - 9:21pm

THANK YOU, SENATOR DODD! You have set a courageous example for the craven crave-in Democrats who still grovel at the feet of Bush, Cheney and their neoCons. Perhaps your determination and bravery will shame your lessers into acting on behalf of the American People, to protect our Constitution, our rights and our civil liberties as they were elected to do. You ROCKED DC today! I could just hug ya! Thank you again!

bz December 17, 2007 - 9:22pm

When the debate resumes, I encourage Senator Dodd to pose the question to Republicans: knowing how Senator Dodd interprets the language of the legislation, do they really want President Dodd to have the authority provided in the Intel Committee bill?

The Republicans disingenuously persist on denying the threats to innocent citizens which the intel bill allows, but given the abundant evidence of criminal misconduct perpetrated by so many Republican legislators, do they really want a President Dodd to have the authority to fight crime by spying on them, their staffs, their family and friends, with no warrant?

The Republicans should be informed in no uncertain terms that if they insist on giving President Dodd the authority provided in the Intel Committee bill, he will not hesitate to use it to fight all manner of crime guided by his understanding of the legislation. And so Republicans should be careful what they wish for.

Phil from the Bronx December 17, 2007 - 9:23pm

Thank You Senator Dodd for the courage and leadership you have shown on this matter! You are the true majority leader in my book! I was calling my Senators today and sent e-mails last week and I will be ready to do it again in January if need be!

Jim Clausen December 17, 2007 - 9:26pm

Today you have demonstrated real leadership. Thank you for upholding your oath to this Constitution.Keep fighting and we progressives will have your back.

NonnyO December 17, 2007 - 9:27pm

GO, SENATOR DODD! THANK YOU!

Yes! Someone in the Senate finally showed us what it looks like to stand up for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights! Do you know how long we've waited for someone in Congress to DO SOMETHING to stand up to Dickie and Georgie? Years! The BEST thing would be to let the last FISA "fix" to expire in February and do nothing, but I don't think anyone will let that happen.

If Harry Reid comes back with that ugly retroactive immunity in some mishmashed "bipartisan compromise" that isn't a compromise but more capitulation to the de facto dictators Dickie and Georgie..., filibuster, filibuster, filibuster! No matter what! Grateful people all over this nation will support you and the other senators who spoke on the floor of the Senate today (I only got to hear Senators Kennedy and Wyden and Feingold besides you).

Now, about those Patriot Acts and MCA '06 which need repealing in their entirety....

barb in west yellowstone December 17, 2007 - 9:27pm

Senator Dodd,

Thank you for extraordinary courage and words in support of the American Constitution and the rule of law. You were truly an inspiration, as were Senators Feingold and Kennedy.

Harry Reid has just lost his job as majority leader ... it's only a matter of time before he steps aside in the realization that you cannot say you don't support immunity for the telecoms and then act in a totally contradictory way. We need more/better leadership in both the senate and the house and hopefully your accomplishment will show the chicken hearted that the American people do care about privacy, the 4th amendment, justice.

I plan to continue to lobby my two senators on FISA in the next month as well as others. But I really feel the push to push out the current democratic leaders and replace them with leaders who care deeply about the constitution and the rule of law is equally important.

There hasn't been a really good day on the law abiding front in America in a very long time but today was such a day thanks to you. And I will vote for you for president too.

dww44 December 17, 2007 - 9:27pm

You deserve the thanks of the whole country for what you did today, if they but knew it. And, while we know the battle must be joined agained after the holidays, I think that because of your efforts and the support that you received from the blogosphere, the rule of law gained a bit of much needed traction today. I will be there again supporting your every move in January. Thank you again.

Just wanted to say thanks from Ohio. If there is a "need" for domestic spying, then there needs to be a great deal of oversight - I feel you've done an exemplary job of ensuring this, and not just letting everyone involved get away scott free. Reading the story on the Huffington Post brought a smile to my face.

May you be blessed for your patriotism and love for this country and what it stands for. If we had more people like you that demonstrated REAL leadership, we would not be facing the constitutional crisis, economic disaster, war crimes and crimes against humanity that the criminal cabal in the White House continues to ram down our throats.

Please enjoy the moment and let's get ready for an even bigger fight next year. Reid, Pelosi, Hillary, and Obama have to go - please keep up the good work and continue to stand up for the U.S. Constitution. Thanks
