The Floor Debate

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

Here's a clip from Senator Dodd talking about his efforts to block the FISA bill on the Senate floor today. The debate has been heated and Senator Dodd's principled position in opposition to retroactive immunity has been made clear. He's spoken out repeatedly against granting any license to excuse the Bush administration's unprecedented reach for unchecked power. Not only that, but Dodd's objections have consistently sought to highlight the lack of oversight and checks in the current Intelligence Committee version of the bill. This clip goes deep into these issues - enjoy.

Congratulations Senator Dodd! Your hard work and patriotism have won the day. We will continue to stand by you until this issue is fully resolved. Have a wonderful holiday season and come back ready to win a final version of the bill that we can all be proud of!

Hooray for Dodd! Looks like Chris won a tactical victory today -- Reid is going to delay a vote on the FISA bill till early next year!

All praise to Sen. Dodd for his heroic actions today in support of American's rights, the rule of law -- and holding those who violated the law accountable!

Thank you Senator Dodd for your hard work and defense of our constitution. As a registered Republican (and Ron Paul supporter) I hope that your leadership on this issue helps move you forward in your quest for the presidency.

That was some leadership. Everyone in our government needs to start behaving like that. If everyone showed the common sense and leadership like this we wouldn't have the ethics problems and other nonsense legislation we have today.

There were already laws to deal what's happening in this world. We need a fisa bill we all agree on that, but those fiber optic T's need non-partisan oversight to make sure they are being used for the purpose they were installed.

At this point in history, we don't know what they have been used for. Could be politics, could be to rig elections. We don't know.

There has to be some kind of feedback loop (Within reason.)

Thanks for standing up!

I can now tell my grandchildren that there are still heroes out there for them to admire and respect. Bravo, Senator Dodd!

I'm not sure this was a victory today.

Only ten Senators voted to block consideration of the bill. Fourteen Senators couldn't be bothered to vote. The rest voted to proceed on consideration of the bill.

The proposed amendments by Sen. Specter and Sen. Feinstein which have provided an occasion for delay seek to establish the appointed one sided secret FISA court as a replacement for the regular court system in determining matters of fact regarding the law. Any judgements they make will be secret as well and because of that beyond knowledge or review.

Someone is going to have to change the momentum because, as it stands now, there is no positive prospect under consideration.

Sen. Dodd - Thank you for being the ONLY candidate to walk the walk. Others are out talking, but you did something huge.

They say that the twenty something generation is not involved enough, That we dont take action or that we just don't care about how Our Government is ran. Well Im proud to say I am 26 And I do care, I have taken action by emailing my support for the Fisa bill to be blocked to my Senator and other Senators and today I have regained some of my faith in democracy. Thank You Sen. Chris Dodd and My fellow Americans for standing up and fighting for our Rights

Thank you Senator Dodd for taking such an important stand against telecommunications in our country. It is good to know the constitution is being protected.
