I hate to be a spoil sport, but the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 is another legislative disaster waiting to happen.

Here's what Senator Obama has to say about it:

The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act includes specific provisions prohibiting the Department of Homeland Security's efforts from violating civil rights and civil liberties of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.

As you mention, this legislation passed the House on October 23, 2007. It is currently being considered by the Senate panel on Homeland Security, of which I am a member. I will keep your comments in mind as I work with my colleagues on this panel, and I will work to ensure that this legislation finds an appropriate balance between civil liberties and security.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
United States Senator

Without writing an essay, let me just point out that the normal legislative track is to permit or mandate actions by our agents of government, not to issue prohibitions. While we have recently learned that the CIA destroyed the records of detainee torture because they hadn't been specifically told not to, that's not how it's supposed to work.
More troubling, however, is the specification in the Senator's letter that only citizens and permanent residents are to enjoy the protections guaranteed by the Constitution? What about visitors? What about minors? What ever happened to human rights?

Roger December 18, 2007 - 7:46pm

Thank you Mr. Dodd for supporting the constitution. You did the right thing by standing up to the FISA bill. You certainly elevated your status as a presidential candidate in my eyes. Thank you very much.

Barb R December 18, 2007 - 7:49pm

Way to go. We'd vote for you in a heart beat. Thanks!!

Kevin Reynolds December 18, 2007 - 7:50pm

Thank you Senator Dodd!! You have my support for President. We need someone who will stand up and fight and lead!!

Justin December 19, 2007 - 12:32am

You got my vote!

Bill December 18, 2007 - 7:56pm

THANK YOU CHRIS! I've waited for a long time for someone to stand up to the Bush administration and you put aside your campaign to stand up for what you believe in. BRAVO! With each passing day we lose a little more of our rights and freedoms. It's about time someone said "enough is enough". Please don't stop the fight. You have my support.

Re: Hannah's comment on the VR&HT act, this is the most vile, McCarthyistic, inquisitional, fascist piece of legislation to date. To learn more, google it or check this article by Philip Geraldi:

Wil Wheaton, ex-child star & current (amazing) author and blogger, has said the following:

Thank you, Chris Dodd

When the Democrats -- who I thought were the good (or at least the anti-Bush, and pro-Constitution) guys -- took back Congress in the last election, I was overjoyed. I thought we'd see an end -- finally -- to the Bush administration's recklessness and lawlessness that's made me feel ashamed to be American. Of course, the Democratic leadership has been a pathetic, embarrassing, contemptible, miserable failure, and now we see that not only have they enabled Bush's insanity, they've been willing participants, helping him and Dick Cheney feed our constitution into the shredder. Yesterday, for the first time in ages, I felt my faith in our government begin to return, and I have Chris Dodd to thank for it.

It's been depressing to watch our Democratic congressmen -- the very ones we all worked so hard to put into the majority -- do nothing to slow Bush's destruction of what it means to be American.

I still don't understand why Harry Reid will honor Republican holds and do back flips to make Mr. 24% happy while he extends a hearty "F you" to Senate Democrats, the Democratic party, and now the vast majority of Americans who are begging congress to do something -- to do anything -- to stop this tyrannical lunatic before it's too late to save our country.

It is outrageous that Senators Clinton, Obama and Biden are asking for our votes, but are unwilling to provide leadership now. If they won't stand up for the principles we all hold dear when they're trying to earn our votes, how can we expect them to do it once they're in the White House? Leadership is doing the right thing when it's risky and when it's unpopular. (And how depressing is it that upholding your oath of office is risky and unpopular? How doubly depressing is it that the only people who think that -- and the only people being listened to -- are Joe Klein, the DLC consultants, and the rest of the pundit class?)

Well, as a complete idiot once said: Fool me once, can't get fooled again.

John Edwards has inspired the hell out of me with his message of hope for America, but Chris Dodd has shown real leadership on one of the most serious issues we've faced lately with telco immunity. While the other Senators have talked a good game, Senator Dodd actually did something when his country needed him.

I wanted to share my letter to him here, in the hopes that somehow it will find its way into his hands.

Dear Senator Dodd,

I doubt you'll get to see this personally, as you're very busy campaigning and defending our constitution from, well, everyone in government, it seems.

I hope a staffer will convey my immense gratitude -- not only as a Democrat but as an American -- to you for respecting your oath of office, and standing up to defend the very values that have made America great.

I sent e-mails and I made phone calls yesterday, but you stood up on the floor of the Senate and did something no other Democratic candidate for president seems to be willing to do: you were a leader. You stood not only with the base of our party, but with the vast majority of Americans who want the recklessness of this lawless president brought to a halt.

Your real leadership has inspired me and many others I know who have lost faith in our government, but especially in the Democratic party.

Best of luck to you in the primaries, and thank you for restoring a little bit of my faith in America.

Sincerely,

Wil Wheaton
Pasadena, CA

RYAN S December 18, 2007 - 10:00pm

Sen. Dodd: Thank you for standing up to your colleagues and being willing to stand alone if need be to stop this awful legislation. The phone companies cannot be granted immunity or the American People may never know the truth.

Thank you Thank you! I wish more Senators had your type of leadership. You’re a true patriot.

RogerHWerner December 18, 2007 - 10:47pm

I've been watching you for a few months. Early this year, I got the impression that supporting you would be supporting the status quo and the DLC. Over the past six months, you have showed more leadership in addressing complex Constitutional issues that anyone I have seen in quite some time. I commend your opposition to the FISA bill sell out and I condemn any Democrat who supported it.

Jeffrey Jaecklein December 18, 2007 - 11:17pm

Senator Dodd,
Thank you for putting our rights in front of your carrier. You are a true American Hero and have given me a little faith in at least one Democrat who swore to up hold and protect the Constitution of the U.S.A.
While the other candidates for President are talking the talk, Sir you are walking the walk. Talk is cheap our Constitution is priceless!
Checks and balances are for people with nothing to hide. If FISA doesn't work for law breakers and companies willing to aid them, the rest of the laws I'm sure make them very nervous.
Thank you Senator and I'm sure I speak for Jefferson,Adams and Franklin Etc.

Brady Mills December 19, 2007 - 3:15am

I think this type of leadership is what we need in the White House. This is especially important when our awful President Bush, wants to make it criminal to disagree or say something bad about him. I say plenty of negative things about Bush, because I don't believe in him. He is the worst President in history, and the mere fact that we put him in office twice -- is outrageous.

Let's get someone in office who sees the bigger picture. I think there are a handful of great candidates out there, and Dodd is certainly in that group.

Many thanks to Dodd for standing up for the freedom we so highly value in America. A true American!

Monica Smith December 19, 2007 - 5:21am

Good morning, everybody

The enthusiasm is wonderful to behold. BUT the internet is an island and even though the majority of Americans now have access to email, many don't even check their messages on a regular basis and they don't click on the links to surf and/or watch video presentations. So, what I would ask is that everyone who visits here (and not just those who leave messages, LOL) please make an effort to talk on the phone or in person to ten people and, if you haven't yet sent out your x-mas cards, add a note about Dodd there too.

In my mind, the only good thing to come out of Bush Two's mouth is the phrase "catapult the propaganda." That's what we've got to do; catapult the good news about Dodd right over the heads of the major media.

PRETTY PLEASE help us pick a president, instead of letting the media anoint one.

Anonymous December 19, 2007 - 7:31am

Thank you, Senator Dodd, for being a good American and doing what is right for this country. That is exactly why you were elected to serve in the United States Congress. I applaud your courage.

N. R. Murray December 19, 2007 - 7:37am

Dear Senator Dodd:

Thank you for being one of the few in the House or Senate to actually honor your oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. I wish I were in Iowa to show my appreciation. I live in Vermont, and when you come to NH, I hope to be able to attend one of your rallies to hear you.

Once again, thank you so much, and have a good Holiday Season.

Best Regards,

Neil Murray

Panamarick December 19, 2007 - 7:40am

Thank you Senator Dodd for your, brave hard work on the senate floor halting the retroactive immunity for the phone companies. It was a job well done, and I'm grateful to you for your efforts. However, it's a false victory really. The fact is your peers wanted to go home for the holidays and that's why they gave in. When you come back to session you will be forced to repeat the endeavor once again, but this time there will be nothing but time for the enemies of this republic to lay in wait. They will wait until you are exhausted, and collapse on the floor if they must, and then as they carry you away give you an arousing round of applause. They will speak with great reverence your name, give the expected accolades to show they are really with you in spirit. And when all of those bread and circuses are over Senator Dodd "Harry Reid, and the rest will screw we the people as they always do. Regardless Senator Dodd be brave and of good cheer, after all it isn't like we ever had a chance for real justice, and quite frankly we now only expect the daily bread and circuses. It's what our party seems best at these days.

Erik Reppen December 19, 2007 - 7:48am

Weird. I just thought the words "Thank you Senator" to myself and "Senator" had a new air of respectability about it. I was born in '75. I've never had that feeling before.

I guess we'll see what happens when your campaign kicks into full gear but I'm pretty sure you just became everybody's first choice for veep if you don't get the nomination.

Thanks for showing a little anger out there too. We really need that reminder that this isn't just business as usual.

I can't say enough. I have hope again. It seemed so bad I was seriously starting to wonder if there was going to be some kind of crazy coup attempt. How did we let them get this far and why, after what I can only assume was Pelosi's peace offering, do they keep trying to take it farther? It's like spoiled-rotten children constantly seeing how much farther they can push the boundaries.

The best thing you guys can do now is band together and proceed to roll back every "accomplishment" this administration has made in the last 7 years in regards to weakening the constitution. If Shrub threatens veto have Pelosi reach under the table as if she's looking for something she may have taken off of it not too long ago.

Oh and please keep this campaign squarely focused on ideas. Treating the public like a PR dart board is a big part of what engendered the cynicism that led to this mess in the first place and it's the reason Hillary already lost the campaign. Let's get back to discussions and debates over what the best of all possible Americas is and making sensible compromise to a point where we can all at least agree that it's something we're all proud of.

Thank you Senator. Thank you very much.

Finally,
There is a set with in the Democrats!
I hope what ever you have is contagious Chris!
Some of our Brothers and sisters need what you got Senator!
Keep up the fight and Merry Christmas to you and your family sir!

I saw the Candidates comments on Countdown yesterday, and he reminded me of what political leadership is supposed to be. I was really moved to see a candidate actually display character and integrity. He has my vote, and I will campaign when he is running for President. It has been so long since someone actually stood for something, and was committed enough to actually make a stand. He is the best hope for America, as far as I can see. I was leaning toward Sen Obama or Sen Biden, but after that display with the FISA bill, they are no better than the rest of the candidates who talk a big talk, but cannot deliver. He has renewed my hope that there are people who have conviction and commitment to make America the nation it once was. Congradulations My Dodd, and you can count on my support for your election.

Isisells December 19, 2007 - 5:45pm

Nothing says leadership like Chris Dodd's threat of a filibuster that made Harry Reid remove the bill calling for immunity from prosecution for telecom companies that gave away personal data without asking for a warrant. Chris Dodd shows the people of this country what he has done and will do as President. Very impressive, Sir! Congratulations! I will continue to stand with you in all your battles against domestic tyranny.

carrie December 19, 2007 - 10:32pm

Don't pay attention to what they say. Pay attention to what they do.

Thank you again, Chris Dodd. You have my vote. However, I live in Virginia.

Amy Carter December 20, 2007 - 10:29am
