Rule of Law

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

It's a relatively light day for posting, so I thought I'd make a few recommendations for posts to check out today.

John Seery's Huffington Post column from over the weekend includes a great rebuttal to proponents of retroactive immunity for the telecom industry. Seery's piece includes a strong defense of the reasons why Senator Dodd and others have opposed retroactive immunity, as well as a ringing reminder of the protections enshrined in the 4th Amendment.

Barb at The Mahablog has a thorough post looking at the defenses being put forward by administration officials in the destruction of CIA interrogation tapes.

Steve Benen at The Carpetbagger Report has a breakdown of today's New York Times story about where money sent by the US to Pakistan to ostensibly fight terrorism is actually going.

Cartoonist Tom Tomorrow has posted the first installment of his year in review of 2007.

That's all from my end - feel free to leave reading suggestions in the comment thread...

Lawyers Stepping Up
By Katrina vanden Heuvel
The Nation

Friday 21 December 2007

We are lawyers in the United States of America. As such, we have all taken an oath obligating us to defend the Constitution and the rule of law.... We believe the Bush administration has committed numerous offenses against the Constitution and may have violated federal laws.... Moreover, the administration has blatantly defied congressional subpoenas, obstructing constitutional oversight .... Thus, we call on House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers and Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy to launch hearings into the possibility that crimes have been committed by this administration in violation of the Constitution.... We call for the investigations to go where they must, including into the offices of the President and the Vice President. - American Lawyers Defending the Constitution

Over one thousand lawyers - including former Governor Mario Cuomo and former Reagan administration official Bruce Fein - have signed onto the above statement demanding wide-ranging investigative hearings into unconstitutional and potentially criminal activity by the Bush administration.....

This is good news but you can scream your head off at the deaf but you're not going to get anywhere. We need a person of action, we need Chris Dodd in the white house. Yes, leave it to me to state the obvious. :)
