Some Stats on FISA Activism

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

I thought you might be interested to read some of the statistics for what people have done through our site to lobby the Senate to stop retroactive immunity.

11,300+ people emailed the Senators (16,000 people visited the page, a 75% follow through rate)...

506,000+ emails were sent to the Senate...

5,700+ comments were submitted through the website (350+ were posted on Twitter) in 7 hours...

135+ people joined the Facebook group since 11am...

340 people reported the phone calls they made to the Senate...

Quite simply, between Chris Dodd's leadership and your activism, we were able to stop retroactive immunity today. The fight will continue next month, but with support like this I am confident that we can resume this fight and move towards victory.

Thank you, Senator Dodd,

Senator Dodd stood up for the Constitution and Bill of Rights for us today. While Senators Biden, Clinton and O Bama said they would support a filibuster of the Senate Bill reported out of the Intelligence Committee, only Dodd returned from Iowa to defend the Bill of Rights today, against the telecom immunity provisions, which the Senate Judiciary Committee and House of Represenatives had previously rejected.

There is no need for telecom immunity. The FISA Court is open around the clock and warrantless surveillance is already allowed for 72 hours, before a FISA warrant is required. The FISA Court has only denied 4 requests, in over 10,000.

Senators who were allowed to view the flimsy Bush Administration legal arguments for telecom immunity, concluded telecom immunity appears intended to protect the criminal Bush administration from their illegal actions.

Hopefully, the Senate will defeat this blatant, unjustified attack on our Bill of Rights, Constitution and freedom, next year.

I wanted to take a moment from my busy schedule today to THANK Mr. Dodd for standing up against the FISA. I am extremely concerned about the direction this country is headed. The Dems seem to take no stance on anything these days! Thanks to you and Mr. Feingold, Big Brother has been stopped for the present.

matt,

i made over 50 calls just today (was trying to work my way through the entire senate, but didn't make it) - and i've never registered any of my calls through senator dodd's website. i bet there are lots of folks like me who've made calls, etc on their own.... the total number of contacts made has got to be even higher than the ones you've been able to count. wow.

senator dodd was truly inspirational today.

TARA WILLIAms December 18, 2007 - 6:37am

Stephen Bates December 17, 2007 - 9:28pm

Although I am a supporter of Joe Biden, I maintain an immense amount of respect for Senator Dodd, and extend my gratitude to him for his uncompromising defense of the Constitution and our civil liberties.

Paul Block December 17, 2007 - 9:36pm

Chris Dodd...my new hero...who'd've thunk. You stopped the further ripoff of my constitutional rights...at least in this instance. Thanks man. You have my vote wherever you run.

Judy Whyte December 17, 2007 - 9:55pm

Thank you Senator Dodd for standing up to George Bush and defending the American civil liberties. Please continue to do this for all, as it seems so many in government today, have lost their way. We really appreciate what you are doing.

JHC December 17, 2007 - 10:13pm

Thank you Senator Dodd.

My letter to Senator Reid -- The FISA Bill should not grant retroactive immunity to the telecomm companies. Providing blanket amnesty to companies that break the law does little to keep us safe and sets a bad precedent.

Thank you for postponing the Bill. But the issue will be the same in January as it is now. You should be concerned about the potential for political abuse.

Dara December 17, 2007 - 10:21pm

Epic. Well done, Senator Dodd. Well done, everyone who acted.

Now we need to be ready to do twice this much in January - if not before. I don't trust Senator Reid any further than I could throw him.

Well Done, Sen Dodd. Thank you.

TAJ December 17, 2007 - 11:44pm

Senator Dodd:

Thank you for your courageous stand against unlawful spying by this administration. We may never know the breadth of the unlawful acts unless it can be brought out in the courts. The government can not hide behind the blanket of State Secrets to avoid prosecution. When Jeff Sessions offers platitudes to the Democratic Senator from Maryland, there is reason to be concerned.

Michael December 18, 2007 - 12:34am

I made my first ever political contribution today with a donation to Chris Dodd. What form does the fight take in January?

Paige December 18, 2007 - 12:46am

thank you so much, Senator Dodd. you have done an important and courageous thing for the American people. you "walked" the "talk" and that gives me hope for the future of our country since we need this kind of principled leadership more than ever. keep it up and more and more people will get behind you in your bid for the presidency. i'm sure of it.

Bill December 18, 2007 - 2:59am

Thank you, Senator Dodd. Your actions and words today caused me to take a fresh look at your campaign, and I sent you a check for $50 today, the biggest campaign check I have ever written. It may not be enough to vault you into the so-called "top tier," but I do hope that your colleagues and the media will see that real Democratic leadership is rewarded and that today will be the start of something much bigger!

Wade Kelley December 18, 2007 - 4:23am

Dear Senator Dodd, Good for you. Keep standing upfor the rights of the people. Thanks and Good Luck. Sincerely, Christopher Wade Kelley

Linda Muirhead December 18, 2007 - 6:19am

THANK YOU THANK YOU CHRIS DODD!!!

And you did it in the middle of the Iowa campaign, because YOU recongnize the Constitutional implications.
We need more Democrats with backbone. I am proud of one of my state Senators anyway. (Let's not go THERE!)

JOY December 18, 2007 - 6:39am

CHRIS DODD IS THE MOST HONEST SENATOR ALONG WITH A FEW OTHERS. I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF BUSH AND CHENY. WHY THESE 2 CRIMINALS ARE NOT IN PRISON IS AMAZING TO ME. WELL CHRIS DODD GETS MY VOTE.

PattyP December 18, 2007 - 8:21am

Thank you Senator! Seems like you're one of the few legislators who "get it." How sad it is that a member of the majority party has to filibuster against his own side. You know you can count on the netroots and grassroots to support you when FISA comes up again in January.

Frank Shepherd December 18, 2007 - 11:58am

Thank you for your exemplary effort yesterday, Senator Dodd. It was refreshing to see the Legislative Branch on its feet again, representing the interests of the American public.

Jim December 18, 2007 - 12:40pm

Thank you sir! I am so happy to finally see a democrat who is willing to stand up for what is right. You just earned my support for your courage and your decision to leave the campaign trail to return and fight for us when it mattered. Maybe you will inspire some of those others who call themselves democrats to reconsider their priorities. We all owe you and will hopefully do our part to keep the fight going in January.

Bob December 18, 2007 - 2:10pm

Thank you senator Dodd You are a true American!

Doug from MA December 18, 2007 - 2:23pm

Everyone who wants to thank Chris Dodd for his defending the Constitution this past weekend should make a contribution to his presidential campaign with a comment saying WHY you are contributing. In a few weeks Senator Dodd should post the number and amount of contributors thanking him. Let all of the other candidates see just how much the people of this fine country support those who ACT to defend the Constitution instead of just talking about doing so.

Don Lemek December 18, 2007 - 2:35pm

THANK YOU Senator Dodd!!!!

Although I have been backing Senator Obama, you certainly deserve a second look since you were the only one courageous enough to take on the telecom industry and this administration in particular.

I hope the other Democrats take notice!!!!!
This President has the lowest approval rating since Nixon, he should be impeached along with Cheney. That will do two things, first get the criminals out of the white house, and second, guarantee a Democratic majority in Congress and a Democratic President in '09 (it certainly did not hurt the Republican party when they went after Clinton, a President with a 60% approval rating).

Finally, please look into a federal standard for voting machines with a paper ballot trail!!

Our democracy depends on an accurate vote count which I do not believe we received in the previous two presidential elections!!

YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

Thanks Again
Don
