Univision Debate: Spin Room Interviews

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

Above is video from last night's Univision debate. Following the debate, Senator Dodd went to the Spin Room to speak with reporters, including a large number from Spanish language outlets. Most of the question and answers above are in Spanish, though some, including questions from Huffington Post's Arianna Huffington, are in English.

Senator Dodd learned to speak Spanish fluently while he was a volunteer in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic from 1966-1968.

Univision Debate Tonight

Senator Dodd will be taking part in tonight's Univision debate. It airs at 7:00 PM Eastern and will last an hour an a half.

Univision is the nation's largest Spanish-language television network. The debate will be aired entirely in Spanish, with English closed captioning. Here's how it will work:

  • Questions will be posed to the candidates in Spanish.
  • The questions will be simultaneously translated to the candidates into English. They will hear these translations through an ear piece that they will all be wearing.
  • The candidates will answer the questions in English.
  • Their answers will be simultaneously translated into Spanish and those answers will be broadcast to the Univision audience.

Tune in to Univision tonight at 7 PM to watch.

Also, we'll be live streaming the Dodd campaign war room during tonight's debate.

Lastly, for a Spanish language version of ChrisDodd.com, visit http://chrisdodd.com/espanol.

Univision Interview @ NALEO

This is a behind-the-scenes shot from Senator Dodd's Green Room at the NALEO Presidential Forum. Here he's interviewed by a reporter from Univision. The interview is in Spanish. I'd offer a transcript, but unfortunately my Spanish leaves much to be desired.

Monday Info Wrangle

No response yet from other presidential candidates about allowing the format of the Univision debate to allow candidates to respond to questions in a language of their choice. John Aravosis of AmericaBlog and Spazeboy have great posts up about the debate controversy; both strongly call for a format that doesn't limit the opportunity for Democratic presidential candidates to speak directly to Spanish-speaking voters. The 2007 Take Back America conference is happening in Washington today through Wednesday. Tim Tagaris and myself will be in attendance listening in on panels and mingling with bloggers on Blogger Boulevard. If you're at TBA, come find us and introduce yourself. We've even started a Facebook event for our presence at TBA -- RSVP now! For those that can't make it to TBA, look forward for some posts, pictures, and videos over the next couple of days from the conference. Whither D-SPAN? As some of you may have noticed, the all-access video channel that we've been promoting as D-SPAN has undergone a rebranding to DTV. My colleague Christy Setzer notes, "Sure, we'll miss D-SPAN. But we were even sadder to have to reject DNN and DSNBC." Expect more news over the coming days as we approach the launch of D-SPAN DTV. On Sunday I was a guest on "Meet the Bloggers," a show on BlogTalkRadio hosted by Blue Indiana's Joh Padgett. Sam Hasler of the excellent blog Trifles from Anderson, Indiana was also on the show. We had a great discussion about the Dodd campaign's use of technology to provide voters a window into the campaign, as well as how other campaigns are using web video and a rundown of recent polling data. Thanks again to Joh for having me on!
