Rule of Law

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

It's a relatively light day for posting, so I thought I'd make a few recommendations for posts to check out today.

John Seery's Huffington Post column from over the weekend includes a great rebuttal to proponents of retroactive immunity for the telecom industry. Seery's piece includes a strong defense of the reasons why Senator Dodd and others have opposed retroactive immunity, as well as a ringing reminder of the protections enshrined in the 4th Amendment.

Barb at The Mahablog has a thorough post looking at the defenses being put forward by administration officials in the destruction of CIA interrogation tapes.

Steve Benen at The Carpetbagger Report has a breakdown of today's New York Times story about where money sent by the US to Pakistan to ostensibly fight terrorism is actually going.

Cartoonist Tom Tomorrow has posted the first installment of his year in review of 2007.

That's all from my end - feel free to leave reading suggestions in the comment thread...

Senator Dodd has an op-ed today in The Huffington Post, calling for investigations into the President and Vice President's alleged participation in a cover up of White House involvement in the leak of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity. Read the full piece at The Huffington Post or click "Read More" to go below the fold and read it here.

Most Impressive Democrat of the Week

Most Impressive Democrat of the Week

The Huffington Post's Chris Weigant named Senator Dodd the "Most Impressive Democrat of the Week":

Giving credit where credit is due, Democratic presidential candidate Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) was the first Democratic Senator to publicly call for Mukasey's rejection by the Senate. He wrote a strongly-worded defense of his position here on the Huffington Post this week, which means he gets the Most Impressive Democrat of the Week award (the Golden Backbone) for the second time in three weeks. Well done, Senator Dodd! While other Democratic presidential candidates came out later against Mukasey's nomination, there's a name for the difference between declaring you're going to vote against Mukasey after it appears to be politically safe for you to do so and declaring you're going to vote against him on principle before anyone else does -- it is called "leadership."

Thanks for continuing to recognize and draw attention to Senator Dodd's bold leadership, Chris. From Iraq to Iran to restoring the Constitution to stopping retroactive immunity to a corporate carbon tax...Senator Dodd has been the one Democrat who stands clearly on his principles. It's always appreciated when someone takes the time to recognize leadership.

Dodd Op-Ed on Habeas Corpus in Huffington Post

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture
Senator Dodd has published an op-ed today on The Huffington Post on how America can become more secure by restoring the Constitution and habeas corpus. He is calling on Americans to help ensure the passage of the Restoring the Constitution Act, which will renew our standing in the world by drawing "our strength from not our worst fears but our highest ideals." Here's what you can do today to help restore the Constitution: Watch my video discussing the bill and upload your own explaining why you believe America is most secure when we draw strength from our highest ideals, not our worst fears -- add the tag "restoringtheconstitution" and we'll add your videos to http://restore-habeas.org. Visit http://restore-habeas.org to sign up as a citizen co-sponsor to the Restoring the Constitution Act. Follow updates on the legislation's progress at http://chrisdodd.com/blog.
