D-TV's Late Summer Break

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture

You may have noticed that D-TV, the Dodd campaign's live streaming office cam, has not been up this week. We moved campaign headquarters over the weekend and are still getting settled into the new space, including getting all of our new gear set up.

We'll be relaunching with a new fall line-up, which will be coming your way with a new, state of the art studio on the top floor of the Chris Dodd Network building. There have also been unconfirmed rumors about a Campaign Confessional Booth being given to us on loan from The Real World.

We should be relaunching D-TV in two weeks. In the mean time, enjoy reruns!

Ottumwa & Technology

The video above was shot at a meeting at the Canteen Lunch in the Alley, a diner whose specialty is a "loose meat" sandwich and a scrumptious assortment of pies, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Senator Dodd talked with people there for about an hour, answering questions on military spending, health care, the war in Iraq, and transparency in government. In the clip above he talks about President Bush's commutation of Scooter Libby and how this administration's actions have damaged the rule of law. You can watch the whole talk in the Canteen Lunch on Ustream.tv. Allow me to geek out for a moment... The live feed from Ottumwa was broadcast on a wee little mobile broadband card. I was only getting one bar of service in the Canteen, in part because though the restaurant has been around since 1936 and is a historic landmark, a number of years back a parking garage was constructed around (and above) it and now it's effectively a couple stories underground. Nonetheless, we were able to stream live and allow people from all over the country to see a conversation between Senator Dodd and Iowa caucus goers over lunch. We were able to leverage technologies to make an offline campaign stop become an online event for anyone to watch (first live, now recorded). What's even more cool is that I've now cut and uploaded the video above to YouTube while riding in the River to River Tour bus from Ottumwa towards Des Moines. And now I'm about to hit publish on a blog post telling you all about it. This is one of those moments where what we're able to do with new media technologies to make this presidential campaign fully transparent catches up with me and I just have to say: Wow. See it all on D-TV

Monday Info Wrangle

No response yet from other presidential candidates about allowing the format of the Univision debate to allow candidates to respond to questions in a language of their choice. John Aravosis of AmericaBlog and Spazeboy have great posts up about the debate controversy; both strongly call for a format that doesn't limit the opportunity for Democratic presidential candidates to speak directly to Spanish-speaking voters. The 2007 Take Back America conference is happening in Washington today through Wednesday. Tim Tagaris and myself will be in attendance listening in on panels and mingling with bloggers on Blogger Boulevard. If you're at TBA, come find us and introduce yourself. We've even started a Facebook event for our presence at TBA -- RSVP now! For those that can't make it to TBA, look forward for some posts, pictures, and videos over the next couple of days from the conference. Whither D-SPAN? As some of you may have noticed, the all-access video channel that we've been promoting as D-SPAN has undergone a rebranding to DTV. My colleague Christy Setzer notes, "Sure, we'll miss D-SPAN. But we were even sadder to have to reject DNN and DSNBC." Expect more news over the coming days as we approach the launch of D-SPAN DTV. On Sunday I was a guest on "Meet the Bloggers," a show on BlogTalkRadio hosted by Blue Indiana's Joh Padgett. Sam Hasler of the excellent blog Trifles from Anderson, Indiana was also on the show. We had a great discussion about the Dodd campaign's use of technology to provide voters a window into the campaign, as well as how other campaigns are using web video and a rundown of recent polling data. Thanks again to Joh for having me on!
