Dodd touts tuition free community colleges

Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd described details Friday of his plan to provide tuition-free community college education and universal preschool.
During a phone interview from New Hampshire, Dodd said he's fought for education reform, including changes to the No Child Left Behind law, and, as president, he would continue.
"The obvious question is, how to do you pay for this?" Dodd said.
Dodd said he wants to remove corporate subsidies for college lending, which he said would generate $48 billion in savings over eight years. Corporations have been collecting profits at the expense of students, who have seen tuition at public and private colleges grow by double the rate of inflation in recent times, he said. . . .

They spoke at the annual convention of the National Education Association, the nation‘s largest teachers union.
The law, passed with broad Democratic support in 2001, requires public school students to be tested annually in reading and math in third- through eighth-grade and once in high school. It is up for renewal this year in Congress.
Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., sported the sticker on his own lapel as he called for the law to be overhauled. "It‘s time that we get this law right," Dodd said, saying it needed higher funding levels, among other things. . .
